A simple bit of code on the Node_Click event of the TreeView control loads the proper form into the Workspace subform control by doing a lookup into the menu table. The difference is that all of the menu items are loaded into the TreeView control at once and remain permanently available to the user. This combined menu and working form works something like the standard switchboards, in that code in the Load event of the main working form creates nodes on the TreeView control from records in the table. I referred to that subform control as the “Workspace.” I set up a table, similar to the Switchboard table created by the Switchboard Wizard, called “tblTreeMenu” (see Figure 2) to hold subform names and arguments. The majority of the space on the form was given over to a subform control (it’s on the right). The menu appears on the left in Figure 1. In this design, I used a TreeView control to create and embed a menu directly into a form that would replace the switchboard. Not everything works out, but everything you do contributes to making you smart, and this design helped clarify my thinking about what makes for good menus. I’ll only give you a brief overview of this menu design because this design isn’t the main focus of the article, although it was a step along the way. False starts and empty promisesįigure 1 illustrates one approach to menu design with which I experimented for a while. This article describes my solution, but I’m going to give you some insight into the complete design and development process–including some dead ends along the way. So, like a lot of other developers, I began experimenting with different methods of creating interfaces for my Access applications. At the end of the day, though, even they are still subject to the functional limitations I listed. To be fair, I have seen some interesting and attractive graphic features in other people’s switchboards, along with some innovative layouts. They all began to look alike to me and they all shouted “Access Newbie.” And, after a while, I just got tired of looking at the chunky, square switchboards themselves. Users especially disliked having to click on a button to close one form in order to reveal the menu underneath it just so they could click another button (or series of buttons) to navigate to yet another menu where they could open another form or report. Not only was it cluttered, many users found it confusing and cumbersome. To make matters worse, with switchboard-style navigation the forms tended to pop open one on top of the other–or on top of the switchboard menus. Quite quickly, I ended up with multiple layers of menus–and lots of confusion on my users’ part as they drilled down through all those layers and back up to move from function to function in the database. And, of course, adding a second page meant using another button to navigate to it, leaving only six functional buttons on the main page. I soon discovered that I also had to use one of the eight buttons to close the database, which meant I could have no more than seven functional buttons on the main page. However, for me at least, the excitement was short-lived.įirst, I discovered the Switchboard Wizard limited the number of buttons that I could use to eight per page. As an organizing principle, the switchboard concept had some real advantages. The Switchboard provided a central platform from which all of the functions in the database could be launched. The Switchboard Wizard helped put a professional-looking face on your databases with very little experience or expertise on your part. Skip the discussions on Switchboards by clicking hereĭo you remember how excited you were the first time you discovered the Switchboard Wizard in Access? With your input, the wizard did all the heavy lifting to create a menu system to guide your users through the forms and reports in your brand-new application. This tool allows you to visually organize your story or novel and link up different elements of that story (i.e., link your characters and places to your scenes), using colors to coordinate storylines.Īnd, when you want to see the progress you’ve made with the outline, Plottr automatically generates a neat outline of your story so that you can review, edit, or keep it if you’re satisfied. It also enables you to keep all the notes-related to the story you’re writing-in one place, create places, characters, and bits of backstories. Plottr enables you to drag and drop scenes and plot lines. This is the go-to app for a lot of writers who are looking to simplify the planning stage of their novel writing. Plottr is a visual story plotting tool, a book planning software for writers that allows you to set up your story’s timeline, outlines, and set some other features before you begin the actual writing of your story. You can improve in various areas of your writing such as grammar, vocabulary, character development, formatting, et cetera. These apps come with specific tasks that can also help improve your overall writing. Some apps are designed to help through every stage of story writing-from planning to the final draft of your novel. Having this type of automated feedback is more efficient than having a person play this role because the apps are never late and they never forget (Well, unless there’s a glitch or an error in their code). Planning apps like Story Planner play the role of a virtual task manager and provide feedback that helps you keep track of what scenes you plan to write next. From there, you can go straight into your word processing app and practice what you’ve learned. Something as simple as Lose the Very can improve your vocabulary in just moments. While waiting for the bus, you can use websites and apps that help improve your prose. Story planning apps such as Story Planner App are available on mobile devices (i.e., tablets and smartphones), allowing you to work on your manuscript and improve your writing anywhere, anytime. Not only do these apps save you time and energy, but they also inspire new ideas, especially the ones with mind maps. I agree with those who say that it feels legit writing using pen and paper, but planning software is faster and more organized. Some writers prefer planning their story on a piece of paper, but that is a stone-age and inefficient way of going about it. Most often, writing is a slow process, even slower when you do not plan the story well. 4) Summary Why you need Story Planning Software 1. Dendrite Opals are usually identified by its milky white to brownish color, with black inclusions. This characteristic results in the relative softness of this stone. Physical Properties: Opal is considered to be a hydrated silicon dioxide, always containing 3 to 30% water. During the Middles Ages, opals were considered lucky and some even believed that an opal wrapped in a bay leaf would provide the owner with the power of invisibility. The word "opal" is thought to be derived from the sanskrit word "upala", meaning "precious stone". Dendrites, comes from the Greek word, "dendron", meaning "tree". General information: Dendrite Opal, also known as Moss Opal or Merilinite, gets its name from the tree-like appearance of the inclusions. How did you like this resource? Store Peruvian opals and opal jewelry away from tougher gemstones or materials that could scratch the surface, such as on its own velveteen pad. The best method for cleaning Peruvian opal is to use mild soapy water and a soft, untreated cloth. Do not expose opals to chemicals, including perfume. Take opal jewelry off before getting into the shower, going swimming or using household cleaning agents. Heat can cause Peruvian opal to lose their color intensity or create fractures. Avoid exposing Peruvian opal, or any opal, to high heat or extreme temperature changes. Proper Care of Peruvian Opal Opals in general are fairly soft stones and are sensitive to environmental factors. Formed at lower temperatures from igneous rock with high silica content, the Peruvian opal is a sedimentary rock composed of oxygen, silicon and hydrogen. Peruvian Opal Geological Properties Peruvian opal has a random crystalline composition, which is why it lacks the fiery attributes of other opals. Considered a powerful healing stone, this opal from the Andes is associated with the heart chakra. Peruvian opal is also believed to help with issues sleeping. According to metaphysical beliefs, Peruvian opal reduces stress and helps the wearer approach the future with a heightened sense of tranquility. Peruvian opal has long been used to release tension and promote free-flowing ideas. Peruvian Opal Metaphysical Properties It's no surprise the Peruvian opal (showcasing tropical blues of the sea) has a soft, relaxing energy about it. Blue is the most common color of Peruvian opal, often being compared to that of the Caribbean Sea, and can contain black dendritic inclusions. Peruvian opal does not have the same kind of fiery play of light as other opals, but it does still possess a beautiful iridescent quality. It was believed Peruvian opals were originally a gift from Pachamama, an early Incan goddess of Earth and time. This fairly rare opal was named after the country, as the only source found is in the Andes mountains. Peruvian Opal History This specific type of opal is the national stone of Peru. It is completely self-contained: All relevant information (valence electron count, electronegativities of atoms, etc.) is inside of the steps if needed. The Step-by-step interface includes these features: Wolfram|Alpha now helps users understand the principles behind bonding and chemical structures. With these steps, users can go above and beyond just seeing what the Lewis structure of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2) looks like. With one click of a button, Wolfram|Alpha Pro users can access Step-by-step functionality that will guide them through the process of drawing a Lewis structure. For example, here are the Lewis structures of water and ethylene. The atoms (represented by letters) are connected by bonds (pairs of electrons represented by lines), with any “leftover” or unbonded electrons on each atom displayed as dots. Molecules are composed of atoms, bonds, and unbonded electrons. Thus, Wolfram|Alpha is expanding its Step-by-step interface into the realm of chemical bonding (with even more Step-by-step functionality coming soon). But as any good teacher will tell you, even more important than finding the answer is the procedure used to get that answer. Wolfram|Alpha now supports Lewis structures-diagrams that show both the bonded and unbonded electrons in a molecule. Sometimes, however, these steps do not work.Bonding is pretty fundamental, as it determines the shape of a molecule, which in turn determines how a molecule behaves. This is a good Lewis electron dot diagram for BF 4 −. The B atom has eight electrons around it, as does each F atom. There are no additional electrons to add to the central atom.Ħ. Put remaining electrons, if any, around the central atom. This uses up 24 more electrons, leaving 24 − 24 = 0 electrons left.ĥ. Complete the octets around the surrounding atoms (except for H). This uses up eight electrons, so we have 32 − 8 = 24 electrons left.Ĥ. Put a pair of electrons between the central atom and each surrounding atom. Write the central atom surrounded by surrounding atoms.ģ. B has 3, each F has 7, and there is one extra electron: 3 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 1 = 32.Ģ. There is a negative sign on the species, so we have an extra electron to consider.ġ. The B atom is the central atom, and the F atoms are the surrounding atoms. Let us try these steps to determine the electron dot diagram for BF 4 −. Check that every atom has a full valence shell.Put remaining electrons, if any, around the central atom.Complete the octets around the surrounding atoms (except for H).Put a pair of electrons between the central atom and each surrounding atom.Write the central atom and surround it with the surrounding atoms.Add extra if the species has negative charges and remove some for every positive charge on the species. Count the total number of valence electrons. After the central and surrounding atoms have been identified, follow these steps: The central atom is usually written first in the formula of the compound (H 2O is the notable exception). The central atom is the atom in the center of the molecule, while the surrounding atoms are the atoms making bonds to the central atom. First, you must identify the central atom and the surrounding atoms. There is a simple set of steps for determining the Lewis electron dot diagram of a simple molecule. Note that the H atom has a full valence shell with two electrons, while the F atom has a complete octet of electrons. The two atoms can share their unpaired electrons to make a covalent bond: Each atom starts out with an odd number of electrons in its valence shell: Each F atom has one bonding pair and three lone pairs of electrons.Ĭovalent bonds can be made between different elements as well. Each F atom has three other pairs of electrons that do not participate in the bonding they are called lone pair electrons. The bonding electron pair makes the covalent bond. There are two different types of electrons in the fluorine diatomic molecule. We can also write this using a dash to represent the shared electron pair: Note that each F atom has a complete octet around it now: These two atoms can do the same thing that the H atoms did they share their unpaired electrons to make a covalent bond. F atoms have seven electrons in their valence shell: (This explains why hydrogen is one of the diatomic elements.) For simplicity's sake, it is not unusual to represent the covalent bond with a dash, instead of with two dots:īecause two atoms are sharing one pair of electrons, this covalent bond is called a single bond. We can use circles to show that each H atom has two electrons around the nucleus, completely filling each atom's valence shell:īecause each H atom has a filled valence shell, this bond is stable, and we have made a diatomic hydrogen molecule. The two H atoms can share their electrons: |
